How to use bold, font colours, font size, emoticons & mo

Postby Paul B » Fri Mar 12, 2004 5:53 pm

This board allows modification of how messages look with BBCode and emoticons. :idea:

BBCode - is that Texas cooking?
No, that would be Bar-B-Q. BBCode was created expressly for boards such as TMB. Detailed instructions can be found here. Some usage examples are given below.

Can I use HTML?
Because of security issues HTML is not allowed on the TMB boards. If you know HTML you will pick up BBCode quickly - it's often the same code except that it's enclosed in "[ ]" instead of "< >"

Emoticons
Emoticons are images that are used to convey emotion or to personalize a post. Some of the available emoticons are in the left in the posting window, the rest can be obtained by clicking on "View more Emoticons". To add an emoticon, put click the cursor in your post where you want the image, than click on the desired emoticon (in the posting form the emoticon will be a series of symbols). You can also add emoticons directly by typing in the symbols they are made of. For instance, if you type "8 )" without a space between the letters (and without the quotes), the resulting emoticon is 8) .

Can I add my own emoticons?
No - it's a closed set. We may add emoticons from time to time.

So how do I use BBCode
The specific example below should get you going. There are a couple of things to be aware of. When you add BBCode it always is placed at the very bottom of your message. If you add the code as you go this is fine, if you want to add some after you are done it can be annoying. You can cut and paste the code where it's needed. All codes must have two "tags" - one to open or start the change, and a second to close or stop the change. The closing tag will start as "[/" and will otherwise be similar to or identical to the opening tag. The buttons or the short cut keys (see below) will enter the opening tag the first time used, and the closing tag the second time.

I want to be bold!
Bold is the first BBCode that has a button assigned to it in the posting window. You will see a button with a "B" on it. You create bold text by pressing the button, typing what you want to be bold, then pressing the button again. When you press the button, an example shows just above the posting box.
The "I" (italics) and u (underline) buttons work the same way.

Short cut keys;
You can access many of the BBCodes with short cuts key. For example, alt+b will set or unset bold. Clicking on a button will show the short cut at the end of the help example that appears just above the posting window.

Colour and size:
The colour and size tags are set with the pull down boxes. Unlike the tags mentioned above, the tags are set in pairs, an opening and a closing. If you want your entire post in indigo, open the Font colour box and click on Indigo. Type after the opening tag, and the entire post will be indigo. If you want to make a word or words a different colour or size, set the tag and type between them.

Quote tag;
See here for detailed instructions on quoting.

Bible tag:
If you are familiar with BBCode this is the "code" code. Anything enclosed by the tag will show up as below:

Code: Select all

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.  (Heb 13:4 -NASB)

List tag
This creates a bulleted list such as:
  • one
  • two

The code should be like what is below, except using [ and ] instead of { and }.

{list}
{*}one
{*}two
{/list}

List = tag
The same as above, except a numbered or lettered list.

The code for a numbered list would look like the what is below, except using [ and ] instead of { and }.

{list=1}
{*}one
{*}two
{/list}

Putting an "A" in place of the "1" makes the list lettered.

The URL tag
This tag forms clickable links. You can set just the link, such as:

http://www.themarriagebed.com

or make a word or words into a link like this:

The Marriage Bed - tech support for your marriage

The code for these two links, with the bracket change from { and } to [ and ], is:

{url}http://www.themarriagebed.com[/url}
{url=http://www.themarriagebed.com}The Marriage Bed - tech support for your marriage{/url]

Images
The TMB boards do not allow or support the image tag.

Wait, that is NOT how I wanted it to look!

The "Preview" button is your friend! Clicking preview opens a new window that shows how your finished post will look. Below this is the posting form, so you can modify and try again. Keep playing until it's the way you want, then click the "Submit" button.

Maybe a quote is the way to control the background color?

Surely this answer will be hidden! (Drag mouse) >> Stop calling me Shirley!! <<

This same trick is used on some other forums I've been to to hide potential "spoilers" about movie plots, etc. That way those that know want to know won't accidentally read them.

I guess here it could be used for things that some peole may consider TMI.

I think there is a problem with the happy emoticon.

When I type colon-right parens for happy, I get lol.

Like.... : ) yields : D

I will do an experiment below:

Happy : ) gives :)

Lol : D gives :D

YUP - a problem!

: ) or : D = :D

: lol : = :lol:

You need a colon before and after the l o l to get a laugh. If you click on the pictures to the left you will get what you want more easily.

Is there a less wide-open mouth smilie?

..more like the wink or the unhappy, more like the top one here?

Anything is possible.

When I have some time, I ought to run a bit of a poll on which of the current crop to ditch, and what might be added.

OK.....I looked and couldn't find this anywhere....maybe I didn't look hard enough lol.

Is there anyways to change the background of TMB on my pc? It's so hard to read when people use pink, or orange and it's blinding to me. And have to highlight the text is well, annoying lol.

Polls are fairly complicated and can be easily messed up, so the admin sets them up. If you have an interest in a certain kind of poll, hit the "Report This Post" button at the bottom of any post and type in your idea which will be sent to the moderators.

Why can't I use emoticon codes from freebe sites, or ones that I have downloaded on my PC. When I copy and paste I get the code but the preview is blank :!: :?: :x Sup?

Outside code will not work on the boards. I believe this is primarily a safety issue, as codes could be copied and pasted that would be inappropriate for our boards.

OTOH, it may just be a system thing.

PaulB would know best and could answer for sure.

Wow, wow, wow..... I'm surfing around and I had no idea there were so many possiblities out there for emotions.

There's one for "my .02" that looks like a couple pennies. Cute.

So here's my .02 for while we're waiting for PB to have time for poll input. (Where's the ribbing emoticon? :wink:)

We don't seem to use these as much as some others:

:idea: :!: :arrow: ::help ::hi ::lol ::tnx ::zz ::)- ::mar ::dog

Here are some I thought were cute or possibly useful.

thumbsup = winking smiley with his thumb, well up
tiphat or hello = both are smilies tipping their hats (one white, one black)
bowdown = I could see some of TMB having fun with this one.
console = for those of us not that good with words
Hmmmmm = smiley thumbing his chin
rofl3 = very cute lifelike smiley rolls on the floor laughing

There are really SO many ! There is even a smiley having a laser battle with Darth Vadar. Of course, a good many seem inappropriate because of possible misuse or abuse. There's actually a rolling eyes (old :rolleyes:) one though that wears a smile instead of the straight mouth like the one we have.
